Gearing Up for Your Garden
It’s coming…Are you prepared? Warm weather is right around the corner! We’re just a few short weeks away from everyone’s favorite time of year: sunshine, backyard cookouts, and fun with family and friends. And, of course, along with warm weather comes a whole new assortment of seasonal foods to enjoy.
But how much do you really know about what you’re putting into your body? We’re not here to be the calorie-counting police; however, we do believe it’s critical for you to be aware of the various dangers and benefits that are packed into some of America’s favorite spring/summertime snacks.
Did you know that the USA is one of the only countries in the world that mass distributes GMO (genetically modified organism) foods, while the majority of other countries across the globe have banned such foods entirely?
Sounds scary, but we at The Farmette at 4424 are here to ensure that you’re well informed and ready to make this spring your healthiest one yet. After all, food is simply information for your body – so let’s make sure you’re sending the right message.
With spring coming around the corner, the seed packets and starter plants are making their way to the front of the stores. Don't just grab any random packet. With certain seasons come specific fruits and vegetables, learn which organic foods to buy and why! When gearing up for your garden, here are a few things to consider:
- Don’t worry about finding a suitable plot in your backyard, simply start a container garden anywhere you’d like (just make sure it has good drainage).
- Make organic choices with your soil, fertilizing, pest control, and even seed selection. Heirloom produce plants taste much better than mainstream varieties.
- Start your seedlings off inside. A quick and easy way to do this is by filling old toilet paper rolls with soil and planting your seedlings inside until they’ve begun to develop and are ready for replanting outside.
- Once you truly get your garden going, you can start saving seeds from year to year, which means you won't have to buy seeds at all.
Before you know it, the clocks will spring forward (next weekend) and hopefully you will too! Stay tuned for more tips & tricks on how to maximize your nutrition this spring so that you’re looking good, and feeling even better, come beach season.
