Gout

Gout is a type of arthritis that occurs from uric acid buildup in the joints. Too much uric acid buildup is caused by the breakdown of purines from foods that we consume. By cutting back on these purine rich foods, symptoms of gout can be reduced. The main symptom of gout is the rapid onset of intense pain on the affected joint that is followed by warmth, swelling, or red skin discoloration. Common areas that experience pain are ankles, knees, wrists, fingers, elbows, and the big toe being the most common site.

In order to help treat gout, it is important to eliminate consumption of sugar, grains, and processed meats. In addition, organ meats, fatty red meats, game meats, and seafood (anchovies, shellfish, sardines, tuna, etc.) should not be consumed because these foods are high in purines. Vegetables, fruits, and organic lean meats are most important to focus on. Consuming soy and low-fat dairy should not be restricted if an individual has gout because these foods help decrease blood uric acid levels. High-fiber foods (fruits and vegetables), potassium-rich foods (avocado, coconut water), some types of wild-caught fish for omega-3 fats, and organic lean meats should be eaten at any point in the day. After workouts, it is most important to consumed fresh berries and cherries. These will help neutralize uric acid. Squash, bananas, and apricots can also be eaten post-workout because they are rich in potassium as well to balance intracellular fluid.

On a macronutrient level, it is most important to not over eat protein to avoid over consumption of purines. The diet should be relatively high in carbohydrates and low in fats.

For gout, intermittent fasting may not be the best option. If fasting leads to dehydration, this will raise the uric acid level in the blood. This is not to say that intermittent fasting cannot be done if an individual has gout, however, it is crucial to drink a sufficient amount of water during the fasting window of intermittent fasting.

Developing gout during pregnancy is rare, but it can happen. It is largely due to the weight gain that occurs during pregnancy which can spike uric acid levels. Drinking water and making the same dietary changes above can help treat gout.
