Adrenal Fatigue
Adrenal fatigue occurs when the adrenal glands become exhausted and can no longer produce the correct amount of hormones. These hormones include cortisol, which helps regulate the metabolism and helps the body respond to stress, and aldosterone, which helps regulate blood pressure. With long-term stress, the adrenal glands cannot keep up with the amount of cortisol that should be produced to feel less stressed, so adrenal fatigue occurs. It is common that chronic infections will occur when adrenal fatigue is present, such as bronchitis, the flu, or pneumonia. Feeling constantly tired regardless of how much sleep is obtained is also common along with craving salty foods.
In order to attempt to improve adrenal function, a diet low in sugar, caffeine, and processed foods is recommended. Caffeine should be the number one thing removed from the diet because caffeine will tire out the adrenal glands by exaggerating the adrenal-medullary responses. Removing sugar is beneficial because too much sugar will cause spikes in blood sugar. To help regulate these levels, the adrenal glands must work harder. Processed and junk foods are likely to have the same effect because they are high in carbohydrates and added sugars.
Foods to try and focus on incorporating into your diet should be foods high in vitamin B12, magnesium, and probiotics that will help support the adrenal glands. Foods high in vitamin B12 are animal liver and kidneys, clams, sardines, beef, tuna, and trout. Almonds, spinach, cashews, pumpkin seeds, and avocado are good sources for increasing magnesium levels. Probiotics are recommended because they may be able to aid in cortisol production. Sauerkraut, kimchi, kefir, goat’s milk, and kombucha are great sources of probiotics. Coconut products can also be beneficial in adrenal gland health. It is common for the adrenal glands to increase in weight from adrenal fatigue, and coconut oil can help reduce the excess weight. Leafy greens, such as spinach, kale, swiss chard, along with seaweed, contain important minerals, such as iodine, that can help regulate hormone secretion.
Along with eating healthy and having an improved diet, it is crucial to attempt to decrease stress levels. Ultimately, stress is what is causing the adrenal fatigue. By exercising, drinking enough water, and getting at least eight to ten hours of sleep each night, stress levels can be reduced.
